Isi artikelThis paper examines English production by British subjects and Japanese production by Japanese subjects in request situations. A previous study (Fukushima, 1994) selected comparable request situations between British and Japanese cultures among which, two situations were used in this study: one which was assessed as a request with low imposition on the requestee and the other which was assessed as a request with high imposition on the rcquestee. The results showed that more politeness strategies were employed both in English and in Japanese when the degree of imposition increased. A closer investigation, however, revealed some differences between English and Japanese request strategies.
