Isi artikel
This paper presents a semantic analysis of transitivity that takes into account the entity that sets the event in motion, the object it affects and, most importantly, the process that links both. Two relations exist: one between the entity that sets the event in motion and the process, and the other between the process and the object. Both relations can vary in intensity. By distinguishing different levels of intensity it is possible to explain a number of puzzling phenomena in the area of transitivity in English, Freneti and Dutch. The intensity can be very low without it being clear whether energy is invested; it can be somewhat stronger when energy is invested, but when the energy flow is not controlled and does not affect the object internally; finally, it can be very strong when energy is invested and when the energy flow is controlled and affects the object internally.
