Isi artikelThe virtually universal opinion of semanticists is that the collective and distributive construals of English plural noun phrases result from the presence or absence of a phonetically null operator. The evidence adduced to support such analyses is exclusively that of plural noun phrases in subject position. However, collective and distributive construals are evinced by plural noun phrases in whatever positions they might occur. Of course hidden operators and hidden syntactic structure can be postulated to handle such data. This paper, however, presents an accountt which eschews the invisible.
