Japanese stative extensions, -iru, -oru, and -aru, change not only the aspectual contours of the predicates to which they affix, but also their epistemological perspectives. Predicates without stative extensions reflect the speaker’s role as an experiencer, while ones with them indicate the speaker’s observer role. This paper suggests that stative extensions introduce ‘distance’ between the speaker and the utterance. The experiencer role is associated with speaker involvement, no ‘distance’, and no stative extension. In contrast, the observer role is associated with speaker detachment, some ‘distance’, and the incorporation of the stative extension.
