As aphenomenon arising from the interaction ofsemantics and lexico-grammar,Gram- matical Metaphor (GM)occurs inthe expression ofboth ideational and interpersonal meanings. Ideational GMismainly deployed inwritten texts,while interpersonal GMis frequently observed inspoken disco urses.Previous studies onthe phenomenon focus their discussion on ideational GMand the use ofGMinEnglish.This study isthe firstattempt to explore the use of interpersonal GMin spoken Chinese.The study develops aframe work for the identification and categorization of interpersonal GMinthe language.On the basis of the framework, a large corpus of spontaneous conversation is analyzed toreveal how different types of interpersonal GMare distributed.The analysis shows that spoken Chinese has a preference for certain types of metaphorical expression.This study also investigates the relationship between interpersonal GMin spoken Chinese and its immediate context of situation, demonstrating how the deployment of interpersonal GMis affected byt he topic of conversation and the social status between speaker and hearer.
