Isi artikelThe Functional Discourse Grammar model has atwofold objective:onthe one hand,topro- vide a descriptively, psychologically and pragmatically adequate account ofthe forms made available by atypologically diverse range oflanguages;and onthe other, toprovide a model oflanguage which isset uptoreflect, atone remove, certain ofthe stages the ana- lyst assumes the speaker would gothrough inproducing such forms, interms ofthe types of discourse acts that may beperforme dinsodoing. The article argues that these goals do not sit easily the one with the other. Inpractice, the whole emphasi softhe levels,compo- nents and modules provided bythe grammar isdesigned toachieve only the firstofthe two objectives. The Contextual component isrestricted torepresenting only those aspects of the context ofagiven utterance which have asystematic influenceonthe form ofthat utterance. Soinpractice, the analytic approxima tion tothe speaker’s performance ofdis- course act types is far removed from the complexity ofthe contextual factors which impinge on his orher actual utterance acts insome specificcontext. The problem is compounded bythe lack ofany systematic differentiation between con- siderations relating tothe language system, and those having todowith the use ofthat sys- tem in some context. The need toprovide for such adistinction ismotivated here bya consideration of various types ofindexical refere nce (specifically,‘‘anadeixis’’and anaph- ora) within adiscourse. Here animportant distinction ismade between the nature of the indexical referring procedure being applied, and the particular expression types being used to carry itout. In fine, the article argues that itisonly byattemptin gtosubsume the grammatical apparatus ofthe modular FDG system within amodel ofthe wider utterance context in which itmay beused byaspeaker, that the problems raised earlier may besat- isfactorily resolved
