The aim of this paper istooffer some counterargu ments to Iwata’s (2006) claim that Broccias’s (2003) analysis of resultative constructions cannot account for the differences between what Iwata calls Type Aresultatives and Type Bresultatives.Type Aresultatives involve non-telic predicates (e.g. The joggers ran the pavement thin ) while Type Bresulta- tives involve telic predicates (e.g. He slid the door shut ). Iwata contends that various prop- erties of Type Bresultatives –viz.the impossibility ofacausal paraph rase, the occurrence of multiple resultative phrases, implicit host predication and the similarity with phrasal verbs – follow from the adjunct and non-path status ofthe (adjectival)resultative phrase in Type B.Since these assumptions are not made by Broccias (2003), Iwata argues that Broccias’s model is unable tocapture the peculiar properties ofType Bresultatives.Infact, I contend that Iwata’s theory isbased onquestionable assumptions and that Broccias’s the- ory is compatible with Iwata’s observ ations without the need toinvoke any ofits concep- tual machinery. Inparticular,Iargue that (i)the impossibility ofacausal paraphrase does not imply the absence of acausal component inthe conceptual representation ofType B resultatives, (ii)the similarity with phrasal verbs isnot limited toType Bresultatives, (iii) implicit host predication isaby-product ofthe semantics of(some)ofthe verbs used in Type Bresultatives,(iv)the co-occurrence ofmultiple telic events within aresultative clause is due totheir nature asdifferent but tightly linked facets ofacomplex event
