Isi artikelThis article seeks to place the autobiographical works of the maverick intellectual Nirad C. Chaudhuri within the context of twentieth-century Indian national autobiographies. It begins by tracing the trajectory of exile and homecoming that forms an integral part of the structural convention of this genre. It explores the conventional notions of “Indianness” and “West”, and village and city that act as opposite poles in the national autobiographies, orienting the journey of exile and return. The article then goes on to show how Chaudhuri’s works deconstruct the India/ West and village/city binaries by reversing the conventional spatial direction of the life’s journey while paradoxically conforming to the same pattern of exile and homecoming.
