Isi artikelThe study presents the results of the fourth evaluation of trilingual school programs in French, Hebrew and English being offered in a number of elementary schools in Montreal. The pupils, all of whom are native English-speaking, receive all academic instruction during the primary grades in French; cultural and religious studies are taught via Hebrew. Instruction in English is not introduced until grade 3 in one experimental school and in grade 4 in the other experimental school. The performance of grade 3 and 5 students in the experimental trilingual programs was compared to that of control students on tests of French, Hebrew and English language proficiency and mathematics achievement. In general, the results indicate superior proficiency in French and Hebrew among the experimental students with no loss to native language development or to mathematics achievement.
