This study has been triggered by a question about the appropriateness of using either THE EXTENT TO WHICH or TO WHAT EXTENT in declarative sentences that are identical except for the two chunks. Dictionary information confirms that the two chunks are indeed distinct multiword expressions with similar meanings, while several multiword expressions lists compiled for mainly pedagogical purposes include the expression THE EXTENT TO WHICH (a frequent chunk considered important in academic discourse), but do not include the less frequent TO WHAT EXTENT. Using data from the over 450 million word Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) to support a close scrutiny of the syntactic nature of the two expressions, an answer to the question is offered. In addition, several points of comparison between the two chunks are also presented: the syntactic distribution of the two chunks in several verb collocates, pre-modifiers of extent within the two expressions and appearance as an elliptical construction.
