This study used a driving simulator to investigate the effects of physical workload and traffic density on situation awareness (SA) of young drivers. Sixteen university students (age 22.6±0.5 years; driving experience 4.7±2.2 years) participated in this study and drove in following or passing driving scenarios under four conditions on a City Car DrivingSimulator using a PC steering wheel and pedals controller. The conditions comprised of the combination of two level physical workload (low and high workload) and two level of traffic density (low and high traffic) in counter balanced design. Throughout the driving task, the simulation was randomly paused toadminister the SAGAT assessment. The results showed that physical workload did not significantly affect participant’s SA in any level, buttraffic density solely affected Level 1 SA (P=0.09).There were two-way interaction effects of physical workload andtraffic density onLevel 3 SA (P=0.06)and Total SA (P=0.04); high physical workload and high traffic density increased participants’ Level 3 SAand Total SA. Non-parametric test on risky driving behaviour of the participants revealed statistical differences among conditions (P<0.05).From these findings, we consider that physical workload and traffic density contributed to the situation awareness of young driversduring driving simulation
