The current competitive scenario in Indian steel sector makes it an imperative that the new facilities deliver the desired quality of output right from the beginning with fast capacity ramp up and least of unforeseen teething problems. These also provide unique opportunities to leverage the past learnings, correct the past mistakes and shortcomings of the similar existing facilities. All this can happen through a robust QA process in projects. The entire gamut of Project QA activities are in three phases – Technology & Equipment Selection: The design of the proposed plant is compared with another similar past installations and the chronic operational/maintenance problems faced by it are critically examined to identify any inherent design shortcomings. Detailed Engineering & Erection: Assure the completeness of the detailed engineering and quality of site erection of the plant. TQM tools like House of Quality, Failure Mode Effect Analysis etc. are prepared to facilitate this stage. Commissioning & Early stage instability removal: Assure the necessary preparedness for startup, subsequent rapid stabilization and ramp up. This is the stage that interfaces between the project execution and regular operation of the plant. Some of the remarkable effects of the above approach carried out in a past projects at Blast Furnace are: - ‘Vertical ramp up reaching productivity of over 2.15 tons/meter cube/day in just 20 days’ which compares well with the international benchmark of a Japanese BF - ‘Achieved rated capacity in just 24 days with as high as 94 % availability in the very first month of its operation’
