OMQ division, a cost center of Tata Steel India is responsible for providing 100 % requirement of iron ore to the Tata Steel. Mining activity begins with exploration, followed by drilling and blasting, and then excavation of material using a combination of Shovel (excavator) and dump trucks. In this overall chain, Utilization of Heavy Earth Moving Machineries (HEMMs) properly, quality adherence, maximization of their productivity are very important to meet the increased demand. To optimize the productivity of HEMMs while maintaining the quality of the ROM feed is a concern for the mining managers. The idea is to increase the productive utilization of dump trucks keeping in account the regular expansion of a mine as the mine gets older. The model incorporates the characteristics of processing plants, mining factors, lead distance from excavation points to the dumping points and operator skill index before it predicts the accurate number of dump truck trips possible from a given face and to the respective plants in a whole shift. A human performance matrix was developed using the past behavior of operators to objectify the performance of operators. This matrix is used as an input for operator skill index which then is used in the production model to predict accurate trips at the start. This study has observed some significant changes in terms of productivity and man management which is the two most important factors contributing in daily production. Keeping all of the above into account the production model predicts accurate number of trips based on the input of operator index and geological schedule of a shift at the shift start which results in optimized utilization of HEMMs productively and quality adherence as per the daily requirement
