Isi artikelMichael Kritovoulus (1410?-1470?) was the governor of the island Imbros under the Ottoman Empire and author of the manuscript The History of Mehmed the Conqueror. Michael Kritovoulus was not a mere practical player or an Ottoman loyalist in intent, but was instead a Byzantine patriot. Most importantly, he did so out of his own initiative, all through his history, diplomacy, and military action. It is mistaken to consider Kritovoulus as a pro-Ottoman ideologue, as some historians have claimed, in that all of his initiatives that could be considered loyal to the Ottomans were a result of his Byzantine compatriotism. One of the most significant was writing a history in order to directly communicate with Mehmed II, the Ottoman Sultan who conquered Constantinople and the rest of Byzantium and sovereign ethnic Greek states. It is excessively critical to hold Kritovoulus at fault in his person for his pro-Ottoman tone because of the regional circumstance. Through his initiatives and manuscript, Kritovoulus represents a larger category of Byzantines as a personal example of Byzantines who were adjusting to then-present circumstances; however, he is distinctly different in terms of how he initiated his response.
