This qualitative study focuses on the preparation for role work and text comprehension by actors participating in a theatre project. the survey was carried out using a questionnaire and by group interviews. It examines the use of learning methods and tools concerning text comprehension and praparation for the role before and during the rehearsals. Another point of interest is the support provided by teachers. An evaluation of the results reveals the varius form of learning techniques and approaches being used. Before and during the rehearsals the learning methods and tools being applied were changed and modified. Reading of the Chinese translation and discussion among the actors were the dominant approaches. Moreover, it can shown that in the course of the rehearsals the meaningof the play and of the teachers' own role finally became clear. The teachers' interventions during the rehearsals were considered by most of the actors to be a useful source of ideas. But some actors were irritated by teacher suggestions that were in contras to their own views. Inspired by their experiences, the actors were able to develop their own ideas for improving the theatre project.
