Isi artikelThis essay examines Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and Tom Murphy's adaption in an Irish context, The House (2000). Through a recurring theme of searching for home, Murphy's The House reflects not only the identity crisis but the fractured sense of belonging that people of the Emerald Isle under the impact of immigration and rapid globalization. The nomadic experoence in the two plays may illustrate how Chekhov reconsidered the serious nature of comedy when the traditional centers of power, lifestyles, and social conventions in his time were being challenged. Not only is each individula forced to accommodate a new, mentally or geographically nomade life, but the dramatic conventions are set free fo critical revision. To explore the soothing comical effects of The Cherry Orchard and The House, this essay will also dwell in depth on how the nomatic elements of the plays are presented through an unconventional approach in cross-cultural contexts.
