What is translation? For me it is communication. When you are communicating you are dealing with meaning because you want the other(s) understand your message. So, when I am translating I always think about the others who will read my text. Translation becomes more interesting — although complex — when the target readers live in different cultures, for example in Indonesian society and nation. About 250 languages spoken in this country reflect a huge multicultural society. Luckily, those who go to school speak Indonesian, the national language used as a vernacular in, especially, formal situations. But, the multicultural setting has some effects in the use of Indonesian, especially in what people from different cultures mean when they use Indonesian words. Therefore translating into Indonesian becomes a real challenge for me: it is a cross- and intercultural communication. How did I manage to convey meaning expressed in English (or in French, my first foreign language) into Indonesian?
