Isi artikelThis paper is intended to discuss a proposed model to improve ESP course design at Indonesian universities called ‘Collective Collaboration Model (CCM)’. This model resulted from the findings of the survey research for my dissertation done in almost two years (2003-2004). The research was conducted at three different universities, two of them are well-known universities: University of Indonesia (UI) Jakarta and Padjadjaran University (UNPAD) Bandung and another one is Andalas University (UNAND) Padang. The data of this research were collected from 355 respondents: 348 were from the three universities and other 7 respondents were TEFL experts in Indonesia who were chosen from State University of Malang, State University of Padang, and Indonesian University of Education Bandung. Besides, some documents: syllabus, teaching materials, and tests used in the ESP courses were also analyzed. The research, basically, aimed at identifying problems in the ESP course design and proposing a possible solution to the problems identified. The results of the data analysis informed that ESP courses were misleading, misconduct, and amburadul. From the research findings, I concluded that the limited knowledge of stakeholders about the basic concepts of ESP were considered the main reasons. The ESP courses, consequently, were out of and far from their basic theories. After having deeper understanding of the ESP theories, related previous research findings, and the results of the survey itself, I proposed CCM as an alternative model for designing the ESP courses.
