Isi artikelIn countries with linguistically diverse populations the provision of mother-tongue primary education in minority languages has often been the subject of political debate. The author clarifies the history and status of Macedonian in the various areas where it is spoken by providing a summary account of its history as a language of instruction in primary education in the Balkans from the nineteenth century to the present. The use of Macedonian has been closely intertwined with issues of language codification and ethnic identity in the schools in Greece, the former Yugoslavia, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria and Albania. It is the language of government in the Republic of Macedonia and enjoys limited status in Albania, but it is accorded no official recognition in Greece, and in Bulgaria the most recent census does not recognize Macedonian ethnic identity.
