Isi artikel
In 1994 a new national language policy was promulgated and, instead of having only English and Afrikaans as official languages, eleven official languages were declared. Precursors to the final Constitution of 1996 (the ANC Bill of Rights, 1990, and the Interim Constitution, 1993) make it very clear that the indigenous languages must be developed and promoted. This decision had particular significance for the National Defence Force, where, it is widely acknowledged, Afrikaans had been the de facto language of all aspects of military life, and where transformation was inevitable as a result of massive demographic changes. This paper reports on language attitudes and language practices at 6SAI in the Eastern Cape Province, and critically discusses these in the light of the national language plan as a whole.
