During its first few years as an independent state, the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan has launched a comprehensive program for the consolidation of Uzbek in its new status as an official language. The state-language law of 1989 and its 1995 revised version are primarily concerned with matters relating to language-status planning. Additional measures pertaining to the language corpus have been taken, among them directives for vocabulary reform and laws governing the changeover from Cyrillic to the new Latin alphabet that has been adopted. The aim of the present article is to examine the ongoing language-reform work in Uzbekistan in order to see what principles and attitudes Uzbek language policy is based on and what impact it may have on the language situation in the country as a whole. It can be generally characterized as centralized language planning as regards not only decision making, but also the implementation of language laws and the assessment of the reform work. At the same time, there seems to be much uncertainty as to what the ultimate goal of linguistic change really is.
