Isi artikelThis paper examines the role of Japan's public broadcasting organisation, NHK, in language planning, arguing that its contribution is considerable but has hitherto been somewhat neglected. The paper gives overviews of broadcasting and language policy, and of NHK's organisation and history, before discussing NHK's language research and policy activities. It focuses on NHK's role in establishing and disseminating the standard language, and on the interdependent perceptions of this role held by the public and by the organisation itself. The author concludes that NHK is widely perceived as an arbiter and guardian of language standards, a role it takes very seriously.
