Isi artikelThis article documents the rise of the Siraiki ethnonationalist movement in southern Pakistani Punjab. This area is economically underdeveloped, and its political leaders feel culturally and economically deprived. Since the 1960s they have used the symbol of the Siraiki language to mobilise opinion against this perceived injustice, which, most of them claim, can be redressed by the creation of a Siraiki province. While the Siraiki intellectuals emphasise the differences of their language from Punjabi the Punjabis view it as a dialect of their language and the Siraiki movement as a conspiracy to weaken the Punjab. As the Punjabis form the major part of the ruling elite of the country, the Siraiki movement can be seen as a case of power struggle between a proto-elite and an elite as a consequence of an unjust developmental pattern.
