Isi artikel
Africans arrived in Mexico with the Spanish Conquest, and were later imported in large numbers to serve as slaves in various parts of the country. While most of their descendants assimilated into the broader Mexican population, some still maintain a notable ethnic presence in the municipio "county" of Cuajinicuilapa and the Costa Chica of Guerrero. This article traces the history of Africans in Mexico and the Costa Chica, and compares elements of the regional speech as described in Aguirre Beltran's (1958) work Cuijla with data collected on-site in 1991-1992. Similarities, now in decline, to historically-attested Africanized speech in Mexico and still extant in other Spanish-speaking countries are noted. It is concluded that the successful introduction of public education coupled with the ubiquity of the mass media have reduced or eliminated the more distinctively regional patterns of speech.
