Isi artikelPutonghua (PTH) is the standard variety of Chinese. This paper is a study of how people of China react to the spread of PTH and how their attitude correlates with variables such as age and birthplace. The collected data from the questionnaire were analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Results indicate that six categories of attitudes to PTH can be identified. They are labeled as (1) realization that the use of PTH is prestigious; (2) concern that PTH might interfere with local loyalty; (3) acceptance of the importance of PTH as a factor in education; (4) recognition that PTH is a means of wider communication; (5) general approval; (6) national and political commitment. The second category is a negative factor which inhibits the spread of PTH, whereas the other five categories constitute positive factors for the promotion of PTH. The statistical analysis shows that there is a correlation of attitudes toward PTH with age, birthplace, current residence and parents' occupations. The findings provide useful data for the language planners in China and the methodology developed in the current study may be useful for other language studies.
