Isi artikel
The current "English-Only" movement is generally not characterized as an issue for African Americans, with the focus usually being on Hispanics and Asians. Yet the historical struggle of Blacks generally, and around Black English Vernacular in particular, suggests that African Americans can be a significant force in the struggle for minority language rights. The Black perspective on "English Only" is explored through a brief overview of the wider social benefits of the African-American struggle, through the lens of the Black leadership class, and through a public-opinion survey of African Americans in major cities. The article concludes that there is a need for activation and education about "English Only" among African Americans.
