Although much progress has been made over the past decade in providing Spanish/English interpretation services at the Federal Court level, the need for competent interpreters in lesser-used languages remains to be addressed on a broad scale. The Administrative Office of the United States Courts (AOUSC), which is responsible for the development and implementation of the Spanish/English Certification Examination, has recently become involved in the creation of certification tests in Haitian Creole and Navajo. Inasmuch as more than 50 languages are used in the Federal Courts each year, the effort to certify interpreters in two other languages barely scratches the surface. On the other hand, the AOUSC is headed in the right direction, as it has carefully formulated long-range plans to develop certification tests for additional lesser-used languages during the coming years.
