Isi artikelThis paper attempts primarily to describe, without going into the analysis of its wider theoretical implications, the demand, often surfacing in the form of language movements and agitations, for the inclusion of the Manipuri language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India from both the synchronic and the diachronic point of view. To view the demand in its proper perspective, we have tried to place it in a multidimensional context, discussing the language situation in India, the course of linguistic reorganization of Indian states and the ethno-religious demographic composition of Manipur. We have also discussed at some length the related linguistic problems plaguing Manipur society, and certain factors that have gradually emerged to moderate the force of the demand for the inclusion of Manipuri. In the end, we hypothesize that the genesis of such demands (agitations and movements) lies in certain official resolutions, legislative sanctions and such anachronistic constitutional provisions as the Eighth Schedule.
