Isi artikel
A federalist language formula has been practiced in the European (Economic) Community since its foundation in 1952, but the pressures towards a (more) centralist, hegemonial approach are very great. Apart from enormous costs of implementation, the Federal formula is not fully in line with educational practices, public attitudes, and the wider international context. And yet, there does not seem to be a more widely acceptable alternative in a federalist European Union, the goal to be achieved (or approached) by 1992. A federalist language formula has a fair chance of survival in a modified, perhaps more restricted, form so as to be more functional and open to the demands of worldwide communication. Despite weaknesses, it reflects more adequately the mosaic-like cultural heritage of Europe. It may also be of interest to other world regions and international bodies that follow a centralist policy, particularly if the costs of implementing it can be reduced.
