Isi artikel
This paper critically examines existing Government and Constitutional provisions which amount to a national language policy in Nigeria. Although the policy currently being implemented is aimed, among other things, at enhancing national unity many problems which confront the policy have made its successful implementation impossible. Rather than being a panacea for national unity, the language policy is a potential source of disharmony and national disintegration. An alternative policy in which the three indigenous Nigerian languages in the present policy are replaced with a neutral one is proposed.
