Isi artikel
While most Pacific languages have been exposed to increasing influence from English and French since early contact days. Wallis and Futuna remained practically unaffected by the linguistic consequences of nineteenth century colonialism. It was only after World Warn that the scenario began to change. Two major events - mass migration to New Caledonia in the 1950s and the conversion from a protectorate to a French overseas territory in 1961 confronted Wallis and Futuna with the same sociolinguistic problems that had beset other Pacific islands for decades.
