Isi artikelThis paper examines the place of Arabic In language education and language planning activities in Nigeria, highlighting: (1) its uses from the ninth century to the present day; (2) the methods and content of Arabic education at various levels; (3) the contributions of Arabic to historical documentation in precolonial Nigeria and to the lexical expansion of Nigerian languages; and (4) the nature and causes of the decline in the status and role of Arabic in Nigeria. The findings are compared with those of a similar study of the status and role of Arabic in the United States. Though contrastive in several respects, the studies complement each other in that both countries represent major types of non-Arabic-speaking nations in which Arabic Is spoken or used for some specific purposes, either as a second or foreign language or as an immigrant, minority language. Moreover, both studies indicate that Arabic faces a major threat, especially in nonreligious contexts, outside of the Arab world. The paper concludes with a prognostic evaluation of the future of Arabic in Nigeria.
