Isi artikel
The paper aims at analysing the historical senses of the lexical item face, whether nominal or evoked by face-based phraseological units. Also, the authors examine how far the semantics of face viewed from a diachronic perspective fits into the universal patterns of secondary sense development of other body-part terms. The phraseological data is put in the contrastive perspective and, consequentl, conclusions are drawn as to the existing equivalences in the lexicalisation of parallel sense-threads by phraseological units HEAD-ed by various body-part terms. The cognitively-driven analysis makes reference to, and relies on, such key notions as periphery/core distinction, conceptual category and conceptual domains.
