Isi artikelThis paper explores the dynamic senses of CAN and WILL. It is argued that these dynamic senses should not be treated as subtypes of modality. The tendency to analyse these meanings as ‘modal’ is a practice which follows from the fact that they are meanings found in modal verbs. However, instead of analysing them as modal meanings, we should treat them as part of the propositional content of the historical antecedents of CAN and WILL, which have not yet been lost through the processes of semantic change associated with grammaticalization
