Isi artikelThe paper characterizes Slovak as a language relatively open to borrowing international loans and their integration in its language system. Acccording to Gyula Déczy’s scale (1973) it is at the middle level of openness. This situation was significantly influenced by the role played by Latin in the history of Slovak (Latin as an administration language was used in the Hungarian part of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy as long as 1867). The proportion between international elements and domestic (Slavonic) words in series of synonyms and in various lexical-semantic microstructures is an integral part of its typological characteristics.
