Isi artikel
The study provides a descriptive analysis of information structure in the Sundanese language. It explores the syntactic distribution and the roles of two particles in the language, namely particle teh and particle mah. Five hundred sample sentences for each particle were purposively selected out of half a million raw corpus of Mangle Sundanese magazine. Tests of topichood of the Topic-Comment framework have been used to analyze the data. The study finds that particle teh and particle mah have exactly the same syntactic distribution. They both mark three phrasal categories, namely Noun Phrases (NPs), Prepositional Phrases (PPs) and Adverbial Phrase (AdvPs). In addition, adverbial and conditional clauses (CLs) are also among the group marked by the particles. The study also finds that particle teh and particle mah serve as markers of two dimensions of topic, namely Aboutness Topic (AT) and Frame Setting (FS). The fundamental difference between particle teh and mah is that particle teh does not mark contrastive topic constituents while particle mah does mark contrastive topic constituents.
