The significant role of high frequency words has been noted in various fields, including language learning, material development, and lexicography. In the English language, a high frequency word list which is commonly used is the General Service List, especially after it is made into a word family list embedded in the computer program called Range. In the Indonesian language, such a list (containing word families) and the accompanying freeware computer program have not been available. Consequently, there have not been any Indonesian language learning materials and dictionaries which are made by taking into account the word frequencies. Realizing these short comings, it is necessary to (1) propose a concept for creating a word list of Indonesian high frequency words, (2) make a word list with the word families, and (3) provide a computer program to place the word list. This paper will explain how to achieve these three items using the available large corpora of the Indonesian language and a freeware computer program. This paper will also (1) explain how to use the computer program to show the coverage of the word list in a general text and (2) establish the substantial coverage of the word list in a general text. Therefore, Indonesian language teachers, book authors, and lexicographers will be able to refer to this word list to augment their work in the future.
