By analyzing my students’ responses to Vygotsky’s ideas through cultural lenses, I hope to bridge Vygotsky’s sociocultural approach with modern cross-cultural theory and research. A few particular dimensions of intercultural variability – such as collectivism versus individualism and high-context communication versus low-context communication – on which Russia and the United States seem to be so drastically different (Alexander, 2000) are especially relevant for this purpose, as are some important differences in general intellectual traditions in both countries. I will also share some of the creative pedagogies that help me to facilitate understandings of “culturally dif?cult” Vygotskian texts among American students.
