Isi artikelThe purpose of this study was to deterrniiie if incidental langirage intervention with preschool langiiage-delayed children increased the freqiiericy of verbal and gestural speech acts. Sribjects were four preverbal atid fortr verbal children with mental retardation. The verbal subjects were selected to be peer langriage models for the preverbal subjects drtring a six-week language interventioii programme based on incidental teaching. Nine speech acts were inspected for distribiitiorial changes between baseline atid post-testittg. The verbal preschool siib- jects appear to have facilitated art increase in coiiiriiirriicative intentions by their preverbal peers based on a signif cant increme in frequency arid distribution of the nine speech acts.
