Many aspects are now presented in bilingualism, including menus in restaurants. This study aimed to evaluate the nature of translation that was displayed in a bilingual menu from a local restaurant, which mostly has Indonesian traditional food, whether it was able to deliver the content of the particular items in the menu. By referring to Baker‘s theory of narrative paradigm, this study attempted to analyze the menu translation from the viewpoint of target language comprehension, specialized content, and functional adequacy. By scaffolding the source text using KBBI, terminologies and translation structures of five dishes in the bilingual menu were studied and compared to dictionaries, etymologies‘ lexicon, corpus search, and cultural background. The results indicated that almost every terminologies in the translated menu, which were very thick in essence and in connection with a specific local refinement demanded special attention from the translator in his or her capacity to connect the source and target language culture. Some terms and expressions could be misunderstood if the translator failed to recognize their authentic meaning of the source text and the distorted perception of the readers. It was concluded here that the understanding of both language contexts helped to construct effective narrative in attempt to translate cultural-related texts for the intended purposes.
