Idioms in literary works pose great challenges to a translator because s/he is obliged to channel meanings from a ST to a TT without sacrificing its effect. This paper analyzes the idiomatic expression in his shirtsleeves used in an English popular novel set in Tudor England. The aim is to provide the most meaningful, yet efficient Indonesian translation. This endeavor involves a multilayer analysis at lexical, grammatical, metaphorical, and cultural-historical levels. The contrastive components in the SL prove to be mere incidental components in the TL. This difference in prominence is caused by huge cultural and historical gaps between the SL and the TL. The translator thus needs to find the most suitable way to transfer this prominence to preserve the effect. The paper proves that a successful rendering of an idiom is an indicator of a translator‘s knowledge on and sensitivity to the TL‘s cultural and historical aspects.
