Isaiah’s case is unaccountably tragic: a previously healthy man sufers a misfortune and is unlikely to have a good outcome. The unexpected nature of this tragedy is part of what makes it so heartbreaking and may, in fact, contribute signiicantly to the inability of the family members to come to an agreement about the appropriate course of action for their loved one. But in addition, there may be some important value conlicts that are relected in the family’s approaches to decision-making: quality vs. quantity of life, authority and resources for decision-making, and fundamental existential values are all under debate in Isaiah’s case. The atmosphere surrounding this case is charged with emotion and frustration, both for the family and the healthcare providers, all of whomshare the goal of acting in Isaiah’s best interests. hese feelings are intensiied by logistical challenges, conlicting visions of the good, and complicated family dynamics.
