Doctors need suf?cient knowledge of the legislation concerning births noti?cation, reproductive technology, child protection and family law to ensure they ful?l any statutory duties relating to their medical practice in these areas. In addition doctors may be the ?rst to recognise the possibility of child abuse and thus should be aware of the relevant laws in this area. In regard to reproductive technology and the treatment of infertility, this chapter is restricted to the legal and regulatory aspects and does not attempt to address the ethical and social issues surrounding this specialised area.
