Isi artikelParadoxically perhaps, given the familial dimensions of genetics practice explored in previous chapters, professional guidelines in clinical genetics are often characterised by a very strong commitment to respect for individual patient autonomy. The United Kingdom’s Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors , for example, calls upon genetic counsellors to, ‘enable clients to make informed independent decisions, free from coercion’, and to ‘respect the client’s personal beliefs and their right to make their own decisions’. 60 1 For the US National Society of Genetic Counselors, the counsellor–client relationship is ‘based upon values of care and respect for the client’s autonomy, individuality, welfare and freedom’, and its Code of Ethics calls for members to, ‘enable their clients to make informed decisions, free of coercion, by providing or illuminating the necessary facts, and clarifying the alternatives and anticipated consequences.
