Indonesia is a pluralistic country. In that respect, it is crucial that children learn how to appreciate and respect differences. In recent years, however we are reminded by a number of socially and politically induced conflicts that repecting differences has not been inculturated within our conciousness as citizens. Religious, ethnic, social and economic differences are easy targets for manipulation to engineer conflicts. Children should be introduced to the ideas of pluralistic living and human rights early on. They may learn how to respect and appreciate others through readings as well as through learning from their teachers and parents. Our observation on the contents of our civic education at the elementary level, however suggests that information on pluralistic living and human rights is lacking or presented very poorly. This paper looks at the situation in Indonesia and the regions.
