Recently, the idea of implementing a genre-based approach in teaching L2 writing has been asserted as an effective way to improve students’ writing skill. This paper reports on a study, which investigated the effect of a genre-based approach to teaching writing on fifteen Khon Kaen University students. A set of three text genres - Recount, Information Report, and Exposition - were explicitly taught in a four-phase pedagogy involving Context Exploration, Text Exploration Based on Model Texts, Joint Construction of a Text, and Individual Application. Quantitative data from the students’ writings (midterm and final examinations) and qualitative data from open-ended questionnaires were then analyzed. Although results from the quantitative findings showed only marginal improvement of participants’ performance, the qualitative results demonstrated a positive effect of genrebased instruction on enhancing the students’ writing skill. This paper will discuss interesting qualitative data findings and make recommendations for further classroom practice.
