Isi artikelPlagiarism should be a concern when teaching academic writing to English as a Foreign Language students. Due to the availability of the Internet, taking other people’s words without changing them, or verbatim plagiarism, is easier and more frequent; and it is considered a serious problem. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between verbatim plagiarism by Thai undergraduate students and several factors: English proficiency, perception of plagiarism, attitudes toward plagiarism, and goal orientation. One hundred and three participants were asked to write an essay, which was used to find their plagiarism percentage, and to complete a questionnaire. Ten students whose plagiarism rates were between 50 and 100 percent were asked to participate in an interview to supplement the data from the questionnaire. The results revealed that perception of plagiarism and English proficiency negatively correlated with verbatim plagiarism whereas positive attitudes toward plagiarism, subjective norms attitudes toward plagiarism and performance-approach goal orientation positively correlated with verbatim plagiarism. Furthermore, perception of plagiarism and English proficiency were the most influential predicting factors for verbatim plagiarism. The study suggests that instructors educate students about the concept of plagiarism and about how to write academically in English. Also, to teach writing effectively, teachers should inform students of why they have to avoid plagiarism and to focus on learning rather than being too concerned with academic results.
