Isi artikelImproving students’ participation in large speaking classes of 40 - 50 students is a challenge for any teacher. In order to address this issue, many authors have explored different management methods to increase learners’ involvement. This study investigates some key aspects of large class management which influence students’ engagement in speaking sessions. To do this, an action research project with 55 first-year English majors at HPU No. 2 was carried out. The data in both pre- and post- stages were collected using questionnaires, teaching diaries, classroom observation and students’ self-reports. The pre-action stage revealed that poor management was the major cause of students' low participation. The hypothesis was formed to test whether improving class management will improve students’ participation in speaking lessons for large-sized classes. The evaluation of the action plan implementation proved that since I, the teacher of the class, employed the new techniques of managing large speaking classes, my students’ participation has gradually increased. My new techniques appear to be effective in encouraging students to participate more in speaking activities.
