All physicians are held to a variety of professional standards both for their medical competence and for their behavior. Some standards are directed specifically to one or another specialty while others can be generalized to anyone caring for patients. Pediatricians (and the pediatric surgical subspecialties) routinely interact with a patient and members of the patient’s family, adding another dimension to their practices. The complex web of relationships connecting the pediatrician with her patient, the patient’s family, and others in the community plays an important role in the consideration of issues requiring limits or boundaries to be set. It is part of a pediatrician’s role as a professional to recognize important responsibilities to patients and families that include a collaborative relationship with the patient and family (Fallat et al., 2007 ). In this chapter, we will examine a number of “boundary issues” including the provision of care to one’s own children, other family members, and the children of close friends; romantic relationships with family members of patients; the acceptance of gifts from patients and families; and political petitions in the office setting.
