Isi artikel
The term inl uenza emerged from the Latin word influentia because medieval doctors believed that the cyclical epidemics of flu were inl uenced by stars and planets revolving toward and away from the earth. While the real cause of influenza escaped medieval physicians, what they did correctly understand was that pandemics are a recurring threat to humanity. According to the World Health Organization, the world has experienced an average of three pandemics per century since the sixteenth century, occurring at intervals of 10–50 years (World Health Organization, 2007). Thus, the need to anticipate and plan a response to this potential threat to the health of the entire population remains a reality.
